The Topic is Bartonellosis: Challenges in Current Diagnostic Approaches
Galaxy co-founder and NCSU Associate Researcher, Dr. Ricardo Maggi, is presenting at the LivLyme Foundation’s Lyme Summit conference in Denver, CO this weekend (Sep 22/23). The title of Dr. Maggi’s presentation is Bartonellosis: Challenges in Current Diagnostic Approaches. Commonly known as the key bacterial agents behind cat scratch disease and trench fever, Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana respectively, were discovered in HIV/AIDS patients by CDC researchers in 1990. Since then, more than 20 species of Bartonella have been implicated in human and animal disease.
Researchers have also discovered that these bacteria play a key role in chronic symptoms in individuals with apparently healthy immune systems as well as in immunocompromised patients. Bartonella infections (bartonellosis) are associated with symptoms affecting the liver and cardiovascular system, as well as joints, lymphatic system, vision, and neurovascular function. Researchers at Galaxy Diagnostics and at the Intracellular Pathogens Research Laboratory at the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine are driving new discoveries on the clinical importance of these important emerging pathogens.
