At Galaxy Diagnostics, one of our goals is to take new findings regarding flea and tick-borne diseases, like Lyme disease and bartonellosis, and develop educational resources for patients and the medical community. A couple of months ago, we helped break down the 2018 Tick-Borne Disease Working Group Report to Congress into a four-part series. This week we have launched a new resource titled From Lyme Disease to Borreliosis. It can be found under the “Education” tab on our website.
When Lyme disease is mentioned in conversation, the first thoughts that enter someone’s mind may be stories they have seen in the news or read online. For example, they may think of a case report of a celebrity recovering from the infection or a dangerous new tick species being found. However, information gained from these sources is often only surface-level. The emerging scientific research surrounding Lyme disease increasingly shows that the more we learn, the more our current understanding of the infection is challenged.
Borreliosis, a term used to encompass all infections caused by Borrelia species, is being adopted because Borrelia species other than Borrelia burgdorferi have increasingly been shown to cause Lyme-related symptoms. Furthermore, the symptoms that Lyme disease patients note vary widely and could be almost anything from brain fog to foot pain. The goal of this page is to describe factors related to Borreliosis and emphasize the importance of accurate testing for diagnosis. The page can be found here.
This page builds on additional resources that can be found on our website, like the Lyme disease white paper written by our R&D director, Dr. Jen Miller. We encourage you to use these resources yourself as well as share them with media outlets and healthcare journalists.
